While Okada riders provide essential transport services, increasing reports of unsafe practices, traffic violations, and potential security risks have sparked public outcry, especially along the busy Apete/Poly Ibadan axis.
KEY CONCERNS IN APETE
1. Dangerous Riding & Accidents
Residents and road users report frequent cases of reckless riding, speeding, and risky stunts by some Okada riders. These actions have led to multiple collisions and near-miss incidents, putting pedestrians, commuters, and other motorists at risk.
2. Traffic Congestion
The already narrow and poorly maintained roads, particularly the Apete–Awotan route, experience severe congestion. The situation is worsened by the uncoordinated movement of motorcycles and tricycles, causing daily gridlock and delays for residents and workers commuting in and out of Apete.
PROPOSED MEASURES AND ACTIONS
1. Mandatory Identification for Riders
The Oyo State Government has reiterated the importance of mandatory identification for commercial motorcycle operators through the use of coded jackets embedded with QR codes. Authorities have warned that riders operating without proper identification will face prosecution.
2. Traffic Management & Road Infrastructure
The Ido Local Government has indicated plans to expand key roads and create designated garage areas for Okada and tricycle operators. These measures are expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along major routes in Apete and surrounding communities.
3. Stronger Regulatory Enforcement
Calls have been made for the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) to intensify enforcement of traffic laws. This includes regulating speed limits, ensuring helmet use, and penalizing reckless riding to promote safer roads.
