More than 10 young people were hurt and taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi after a Tuesday attack on the convoy of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
These youths were reportedly being treated at the hospital after suspected attackers attacked Obi’s vehicle along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway, stopping him from moving to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area.
Obi was traveling to Yelwata to show support for people affected by a terrorist attack that happened on June 13, 2025.
After the incident, Obi accused the Special Assistant to the Governor, Hyacinth Alia, on Youths of planning the attack and organizing the youths to block his movement.
Obi had arrived in Makurdi, the state capital, earlier that day and was on the way to Yelwata when the attack happened.
A staff member from BSUTH, who asked not to be named, confirmed that more than 10 injured youths were brought to the hospital for urgent care.
“More than 10 injured people were brought in yesterday for urgent treatment.
They are being treated. I don’t know where they came from. We don’t know if they were involved in Peter Obi’s incident yesterday or not,” the official said.
“What we do know is that they are accident victims, and they are being treated.
They are responding well to treatment, and none of them have died,” the official added.
Attempts to reach the chief medical director of BSUTH, Dr Stephen Hwande, for confirmation were unsuccessful as he did not answer the calls.
However, the NDC Benue State publicity secretary, Agile-Bem Jabez Ordedoo, made a statement on Wednesday saying that one of the alleged attackers had died while being treated at the hospital.
“We regret to inform you that one of the young men who were involved in attacking the Presidential and Governorship candidates of NDC has passed away this morning at the teaching hospital in Makurdi,” Ordedoo said.
He added that the deceased had been placed at the mortuary, while others remained seriously injured in the hospital’s emergency room.
The NDC spokesperson also mentioned that the parents of some of the injured youths had not yet arrived, which was delaying the start of their treatment.
The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, could not be reached for a comment at the time of this report.
The details surrounding the injuries and the alleged death could not be independently confirmed at the time of this report.
